['njuːfəndlənd, auch njuː'faʊndlənd], deutsch Neufụndland, Provinz im Osten Kanadas, 404 212 km2, (1999) 541 000 Einwohner, fast ausschließlich britischer Abstammung. Hauptstadt und größte Stadt ist Saint John's. - Die Provinz besteht aus der Insel Neufundland (108 860 km2) und aus dem östlichen Teil der Halbinsel Labrador. Die Insel Neufundland gehört zum Gebirgssystem der Appalachen; die wellige, von niedrigen Bergzügen (bis 806 m über dem Meeresspiegel) durchzogene, glazial überformte Hochfläche im Inselinneren ist mit Wald oder Tundra bedeckt und wenig besiedelt. Die Küsten der Insel sind stark gegliedert (Buchten, Fjorde, Inseln); zahlreiche Fischersiedlungen, besonders auf der Halbinsel Avalon. Das Klima der Insel ist kühlgemäßigt, mit kalten, schneereichen Wintern; sehr häufig sind Nebel. - Wirtschaftsgrundlagen der Provinz bilden Küsten- und Hochseefischerei (Neufundlandbänke); Holzwirtschaft mit Zellstoff- und Papierfabriken; Bergbau, besonders auf Eisenerze bei Labrador City/Wabush; bedeutendes Wasserkraftwerk an den Churchill Falls (Churchill River). Landwirtschaft und Industrie sind unbedeutend. Die Arbeitslosigkeit weist mit über 20 % (1994) die höchsten Werte in Kanada auf. Handels- und Kulturzentrum ist Saint John's.
 
 
Newfoundland, um 1000 von normannischen Seeleuten berührt (Anse aux Meadows), aber erst nach der Landung von G. Caboto 1497 besiedelt, seit dem 17. Jahrhundert von Franzosen und Engländern wegen des reichen Fischfangs umkämpft, wurde im Frieden von Utrecht (1713) Großbritannien zugesprochen. Es erhielt 1855 Selbstverwaltung. 1928 unterzeichnete Newfoundland den Briand-Kellogg-Pakt. 1949 trat es als 10. Provinz Kanada bei.
